From the 15th until the 19th century, the guild jugs or tankards were mostly produced by coppersmiths. The materials used included brass, copper and tin and there is a tap near the base of some specimens.

Tankards were used for occasions such as guild gatherings, but also council meetings. At celebrations marking the completion of an apprenticeship for a trade, the apprentices drank their journeyman’s drink from them.

Die Zunftkannen bzw. Schleifkannen wurden vom 15. bis 19. Jahrhundert zumeist von Rotschmieden und Zapfenmachern hergestellt. Als Material fanden Messing, Kupfer oder auch Zinn Verwendung und in Bodennähe ist bei einigen Exemplaren ein Zapfhahn angebracht. Schleifkannen fanden z. B. bei Zunft- und Gildenzusammenkünften, aber auch bei Ratsversammlungen Verwendung. Bei Freisprechungsfeiern des Handwerks nahmen die Lehrlinge daraus ihren Gesellentrunk.
