Wooden barrels were refined in the pitching workshop. The pitching process involved sealing the barrel with pitch obtained from pine and larch resin.

It is necessary to pitch wooden barrels at regular intervals. This involves coating the barrel with a fresh layer of pitch, covering the pores and joints in the wood and preventing carbon dioxide from being expelled.

For cleaning, the barrels have to be depitched. This is the process whereby the old pitch is removed from the barrel. To create a new coat, the pitch is heated to approximately 180 degrees and sprayed into the barrel as a liquid with the help of a pitching stand. So that the pitch can be distributed uniformly, the barrel is hoisted onto a rolling machine and turned for a few minutes until the resin has cooled.

In der Picherei werden Holzfässer veredelt. Pichen nennt man den Vorgang des Abdichtens des Fasses durch Pech, welches aus Kiefern- und Lärchenharz gewonnen wird.

Holzfässer müssen in regelmäßigen Abständen gepicht werden. Dafür erhält das Fass eine frische Pechschicht, die die Holzporen und Fugen überdeckt und damit verhindert, dass Kohlensäure austreibt.

Bei der Reinigung muss das Fass zunächst entpicht werden, was bedeutet, dass das alte Pech aus dem Holzfass entfernt wird. Für die neue Schicht wird Pech bei circa 180 Grad erhitzt und im flüssigen Zustand mit Hilfe eines Pichbockes in das Fass gespritzt. Damit sich das Pech gleichmäßig verteilt, wird das Fass auf eine Rollmaschine gehievt und ein paar Minuten gedreht, bis das Harz erkaltet ist.
